Dell Dimension E510 USB Ports not funcitoning
#1
Hello,

Sorry, I inadvertently posted this thread in the introduction thread.

I need help with the above mentioned Machine because several problems going on. The first problem started off with the CD/DVD drive unable to read a cd/dvd even though the cd/dvd icon is visible. I unplug and reconnected the cable to no avail, and I also deleted the upper and lower filters. Now here is the other problem that arose. As you will note this machine has three usb ports in the back and two ports in the front (no p/s 2 ports installed). At the time I started working on the machine, only the front ports were functioning (the ones in the back weren't) which was ok since I had a usb to p/s 2 connector to connect keyboard and mouse. I don't know if deleting the filters worked because now none of the usb ports are working; therefore, I am at a loss. I was considering installing a usb adapter, but then what about installing the hardware drivers? Any
help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced

I would try this to try and fix the CD/DVD issue. You have to remember that its an 8 year old computer. DVD/CD ROMs can failure so it might just be a faulty drive.

Have you tried plugging something into the back USB ports without the PS/2 to USB adapter?

I don't think the upper/lower filters affect the usb ports. Sounds like the usb controller on the motherboard may have let go. Do you see any usb icons/devices listed in device manager? You could try to install a pci/pci-e usb expansion card and see if you get usb to work from that. No drivers needed.

Sounds like you may have a bad cd/dvd drive.

Hi jmitservices,
Thanks for the website and I will give you an update later.  Regarding the back usb ports, when I got the machine, when I plug the PS/2 to USB, nothing, but when I plugged a flash drive in each port, all were ok.  Now, none of them are working. I subsequently went out and bought a usb keyboard and usb mouse, to test if the problem was with PS/2 to USB adapter, but that did not work either.  But I am definitely going to take a look at the website.  Thanks again.

Hi Timster,

Right now due the USB ports problem and being unable to plug a usb keyboard and mouse, I am unable to check.  I will follow up with you.
Thanks for all your help.

Ah... no mouse or keyboard ...yeah... If you reboot can you get into the BIOS with the keyboard? Can you get into safe mode with keyboard? (f8)

I had a similar problem where my old PC spat out an error saying "USB stick is corrupted" whenever certain USB sticks were plugged in. I fixed it really easily by going into device manager and uninstalling the drivers for them and then rebooting the PC which reinstalled new ones. It usually works so you should give it a try.
