I have an asus laptop with ssd installed and 4gb of ram, ive read that you want your ssd drive to do minimal writes as possible, i dont have an external usb hd but i have a few flash drives which brings up my question about can you put a pagefile on usb flash drive? Like ive gone to advanced settings to try to do so but only my c drive shows is why i ask.

You can, but there will be no benefit in putting your pagefile on a USB. You're SSD will be faster than a USB drive and you will suffer bottle neck if you put your pagefile on USB.
Just leave it on system managed page file and place the amount you want, you can run into problems with software requiring larger page file, like games, auto cad etc etc, if that is the case and you experience problems, leave on automatically manage. You only have 4GB to play with. If you had 16GB you could get away with disabling pagefile.
