But I suppose things like a decent FW, AV (and other anti-malware products) can help give some protection, the main one being stay away from dodgy sites and don't click links that you are unsure of or download from dodgy email links.
Although if you use Outlook (another MS by-product) currently there is a way to have your system overtaken by a hacker or just a malicious attacker simply by reading the email (even in Preview form).
