Well that's good news Bea, rootkits can be a nightmare to remove. But as long as you clean them after scan, you should be OK.
You might want to upgrade to a newer version of Windows at some point.

Hi Bea,

Try and create Norton™ Bootable Recovery Tool
  • Download Instructions:
  • If you have not used the Norton Power Eraser tool yet, try it first to target deeply embedded threats that your traditional virus scanning may have missed.
  • Click Download Now, above
  • On the File Download dialog, click Save.
  • Select the location to where you want the file saved, and click Save.
  • Go to the location of the downloaded file and double-click the NBRT Retail Downloader icon.
  • If you get a prompt asking you to confirm that you want to run the file, click Run to continue with the download process.
  • Once the download completes, the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool wizard starts automatically.
Important: Your computer must support USB booting for the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool to run on a USB device.
