Cannot reboot or shutdown/shutting down screen
#1
Hi

My current problem has a backstory going back to around April where WU screwed up and I switched them off for long stretches at a time, and attempted fixes every now and then, maybe 3 times in all till end of September.
Last week I did a USB repair and got them working again, but restart/shutdown hangs on the “Windows shutting down” screen and I have to shut down & restart with the power button.
Windows starts up perfectly (and even configures updates before welcome screen when that was the reason for the hard restart) and no prompts for Do You Wish to Repair etc.

What I have done:

CHKDSK x 2 (fine)

SFC /SCANNOW x 5 or more (fine)

Reg fixes to 5000 (from 12000) for 2 items in tutorial for shutdown issues (AppHanging/shutdown)

Checked Device Manager in Normal and Safe Boot with hidden devices, where everything is fine in Normal but 2x Logitech Driver Interface & Security Processor Loader Driver are yellow in Safe Mode.
Reboots normally from Safe Mode into Normal when I uninstall these, but not vice versa and not in a clean boot

Nothing shows up in Malwarebytes & Panda and have scanned for rootkits with TDSSKILLER.

Hi buruha, thanks for contacting the forum!
Please could you also run HitmanPro

[Image: hitmanpro.png]HitmanPro

  • Please download HitmanPro.
  • Launch the program by double clicking on the icon. (Windows Vista/7 users right click on the HitmanPro icon and select run as administrator).
  • Click on the next button. You must agree with the terms of EULA.
  • Check the box beside "No, I only want to perform a one-time scan to check this computer".
  • Click on the next button.
  • The program will start to scan the computer. The scan will typically take no more than 2-3 minutes.
  • When the scan is done click on drop-down menu of the found entries (if any) and choose - Apply to all => Ignore <= IMPORTANT!!!
  • Click on the next button.
  • Click on the "Export scan results to XML file".
  • Save that file to your desktop and post in your next reply.

Also please download CrystalDiskInfoPortable and run it. Then please take a snapshot of the screen and post it in your next reply.

Was this the tutorial you watched to try to fix the issue:

If not follow this guide created by brian

Hi again,

Yes, that's the tutorial I watched. I didn't have the AutoEndTask key and didn't make one; should I?

What's ironic is that once I had got the WU finally fixed then the reboot/shutdown issue started. I've never had it before.

Have you read this article  because your receiving Event Error 1074

Have you tried to use Shutdown Event Tracker? this can track down the reason for system Shutdowns and Restarts.

This could also help because your getting error 0x80020002

All this seems to be happening after Windows Update, I would take a read of the Windows Update Log  and see what you can find in there, it could help resolve your issue.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Its a tricky one to resolve.

Okay system has no infections. Please follow Brian's instructions and if that doesn't work, we will look at other solutions.

I agree its a tricky one, could be anything stopping it from working.

Please could you also install this Hotfix to see if it resolves the issue: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/977307

Thanks; however, I'm not receiving a 1704 error nor is the system shutting down or constantly rebooting (error 0x80020002).

Everything is fine until it comes to rebooting and then I am stuck with the shutting down..... screen, until I finally sit on the power button.

When I restart, there is no message like "Windows shut down unexpectedly" or similar and everything is hunky dory; in fact, when I power down & restart after WU it behave as normally & configures the updates as it would have had it rebooted under its own steam.

The sfc reports no error nor does chkdsk.

As far as I'm concerned I can go like this for ever, as long as I am not creating any long-term issues that will screw up the OS in future.

Updating is occurring promptly & I have just installed MSE (2310138 2 definitions) and ITraceRelogger (2882822) at an enviable rate with no reboot required.

It certainly is a tricky one as I haven't seen anyone else with the same, or vaguely similar problem.

OK, please try this solution to your problem:

ClearPageFile at Shutdown was already at 0 and the value for WaitToKillServiceTimeout is now to set to 1000 from 15000 that had been before.

I rebooted, waited 3 minutes with the shutting down...... screen, powered up and here I am.

It's a bollox, innit.
