Unable to shrink volume
#41
I know im a little late but... If there are system files towards the end of your disk than you can not shrink the volume. you can use auslogics disk defrag to determine this (do not run auslogics disk defrag just open it)

Try using the Windows Disk Management, check out my tutorial on how to do that:

That program is only meant for defragmentation of a system, not shrinking a volume!
The greens squares show the sectors that are not fragmented.
If you are having trouble shrinking the volume.

First I suggest downloading CrystalDiskInfoPortable and run it. Then take a snapshot of your hard drive's health and temperature and include it in your next reply.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks

Auslogics disk defrag theres also a portable version
https://downloads.auslogics.com/en/disk-defrag/ausdiskdefragportable.exe all that needs to be done is open the program dont run any of the defrags or anything like that but open it up and when you see the graph (or geen little square) all the squares should be at the top but if you see any sqaures towards the the end will be the problem in why you cant shrink the volume (partition). If you do see any squares towards the end of the graph those would be system files and the only way to fix it would be to reinstall windows or use a different hard drive.

Have you tried my suggestions?

I don't see how that program can tell you if you can't shrink the volume. How do you know? Link us to a page where it says that.

I used perfectdisk a few times, works on vista, win 7 x32 x64, here's easy instructions. First, create a System Image, I use AOMEI backupper free. Here's the link https://docs.raxco.com/perfectdisk/12/en/FAQ_PD_Best_Shrink_Method.htm

Im sure theres other programs but auslogics disk defrag has a graph when you first open the program and it shows you where files are at and if there are any files towards the end of the graph those would be system files which means you cant shrink the partition so the next time you run into an unable to shrink the volume try using it. It will not fix the issue but it will show that there are system files at the end. If your using lets say a tb hd with only a 200gb used wouldnt it suck if you cant shrink the volume thatd happen because of system files at the end of the hd

This picture shows me that i would be able to shrink the volume because i dont see any files towards the end of the hd or in this case where the red box is
