What CPU Power Headers Do I Use

When building a computer, many people don’t understand what CPU power headers do I use. You have many types. The common ones are 4+4 power headers, 8+4 power headers, 8+8 power headers. But you can get motherboards with 4 pin or just 8 pin power header on the motherboard. So which ones do you use? or do I use both?

Key points to remember:

1. Standard connector: Most CPUs only require a single 8-pin CPU power connector.

2. Overclocking: If you plan to heavily overclock your CPU, you might need to use an additional 4-pin or 8-pin connector if your motherboard has one available.

3. Check your power supply: Make sure your power supply has the necessary cables with the correct connectors to match your motherboard’s CPU power requirements.

4. Power distribution: By using two connectors, the power draw is spread across both cables, potentially reducing heat build-up in a single cable.

5. High-end CPUs: Powerful CPUs with very high TDP (Thermal Design Power) often require both connectors to be plugged in for stable operation.

6. Normal usage: For most standard CPU usage, only one 8-pin connector is necessary.

7. 8-pin CPU power header Can deliver up to 336 watts of power. An 8-pin connector usually has a 12V rail capable of delivering around 28 amps, which when multiplied by 12V results in 336 watts (12V x 28A = 336W).

8. It is highly recommended to use both CPU power connectors to provide sufficient power to your processor if you have a very high TDP Processor. The CPU power connectors, typically labelled as 8-pin and 4-pin or 8-pin and 8-pin connectors, work together to deliver consistent and stable power supply to the CPU. This helps with stability and reduce the risk of crashes in 300w power draw CPU’s. The CPU will only draw of the power it needs.
