Hi Guys,

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit running on my desktop computer...every month I clone my C: 500 GB drive on to another internal HDD of the same size.  I always get "Operation completed successfully"...but when I take my C: drive out and boot from my Clone I get this...



I then have to boot into my Windows 7 Repair Disk and in "System Recovery Options" it says...Windows found problems with your computers startup options - "Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer"...I then click "Repair and Start" and windows starts and it's back to normal.

This happens every time I clone my C: drive...I have used Aomei Backupper...Easeus Todo and Macrium Reflect all free versions and I get the same result.  If I take out the Clone and put back my C: drive I still get the same massage as above and have to use the Repair Disk again...what am I doing wrong.
The Clone is suppose to be the exact copy of the original...which it is...so why does this happen...Thanks Guys.

Are you cloning the whole disk. Sector by sector?

1. Insert your Windows CD or USB.
   
2. Restart you're computer and boot to CD or USB (You have to change boot order in BIOS),
   
3. Press any key when you see “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD”
   
4. Do Not click Install Click “Repair your computer” in the bottom-left-hand corner, just after select language window.
   

5. Startup Repair will scan your computer for Windows installations once complete select your install from the list.:
 
6. Choose “Startup Repair” from recovery options to begin repair:[/list]

I have followed the instructions that the software I've used told me to do...I've made sure all partitions on my C: drive are cloned.

After I use the Repair Disk...the clone works fine and seems to be just like the original. I was using the clone to start this thread...the strange thing is...when I put my C: drive back in and boot from it I get the same massage even though nothing has been done to this drive...maybe it's Microsoft.

You might have to fix the mbr and boot through the recovery console.
You do this by using the built in bootrec tool.

See how you go though after doing Brians suggestion

Thank you for your reply too...I have done this in the past with the Windows 7 Install disk also and it works...but why does it happen in the first place...this is what I don't understand. Maybe Microsoft don't like people cloning their OS.

Once in the RC:

"bootrec.exe /fixmbr" then press enter
"bootrec.exe /fixboot" then press enter
"bootrec.exe /scanos" then press enter

Then exit and restart

Are you cloning the drive while in Windows? ie: at the desktop? try clone drive from a there bootable CD, because it might have trouble cloning boot record while at desktop, worth a try.

If you are doing this procedure every month why not get some sort of RAID 1 going?

Hi Brian,

Yes I'm cloning from the desktop...How do I clone from the CD ? I never had this problem with XP a few years ago...maybe it's that 100MB boot partition in win 7 giving me the problem ?
