Full Version: Change to 'Power saver' plan when idle

Hi folks,

I hope you are well.

Firstly a spot of background info. We have an office full of high spec and/or power-hungry workstations which many employees log in to remotely when away from their desk so we need them powered on 24x7x365. We recently did an experiment where everyone reduced their Windows power plan to Power Saver when they left their desk, which took our overall power consumption from 9.8kw to 6.1kw. That's a pretty hefty saving!

I'm aware of Intel's SpeedStep, AMD Cool'n'Quiet and all those good stuff which reduce clock speeds and power draw upon idleness, and although they work well (as we've proved) we're looking for a way to enforce the Power Saver plan and therefore reduce power consumption to the absolute minimum when folks leave their desk. After all, Windows Updates and disk defragmentation tools don't need 4.5GHz do they?!  Big Grin

I've done a lot of research and investigation on this, but so far I've been pretty unsuccessful. Essentially I'm looking for a way to change the power plan to Power Saver when there has been no keyboard or mouse activity for 10 minutes. Can anyone offer any tips or suggestions? Smile

Regards,
Olorin
