Came here on the back of watching britec vids on YT. I'm a 42 yr old dad of three, always liked tinkering about with computers, I used to work for Intel repairing mobos, not debugging them, just repairing, the tech just told me which component to replace and I did it. I'm a bus driver now, don't ask how that happened! Recently started an online course in PC repair just to continue it as a hobby, nearly finished with that and next step is to get the A+. Don't know where it'll bring me but I always enjoyed learning new stuff.
Well the A+ can certainly help you to get a cubicle job somewhere as a help desk. But as a computer technician myself, I've been self taught, ever since Microsoft told me it would cost me $35.00 an hour to fix what I found out was a simple fix! (Back in W98 days). I'm always learning to rely on many resources to confirm my suspicions regarding a problem with a computer. So far in the USA there are some states requiring a A+ Cert, like Texas and California. But the majority of the US does not require A+ Certs.

Hi Akron, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am in Ireland where they are sticklers for certs, mainly because there are so many competing for jobs, and not to mention the industry created for companies providing the curriculum for these certs. But I am totally with you on good old fashioned experience, you can't beat it with a stick! For years people have been saying I should open a repair shop, but to be honest I love my job as a bus driver, and it's easier to make money on the side without all the overheads. But I've just started a family and was thinking maybe now is the time for a change, hence the pursuit of CV filling certs required in this country. Maybe I could pick your brains some time on some of the resources you use
