I've got a windows 10 laptop that's taking a long time to startup and it seems to have a lot of processes running.

I have checked it with Malwarebytes and Kaspersky antivirus there's no malware or virus on it

the windows 10 is the latest April update 1803

what can I try next?
Try removing all USB from the computer apart from Keyboard & Mouse and see if it improves if not try a clean boot

How to Clean boot in Windows 8 and Windows 10

  • Press the "Windows + R
  • Type msconfig and click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Selective startup.
  • Clear the Load startup items check box.
  • Click the Services tab.
  • Select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
  • Click Disable all.
  • Click the Startup tab.
  • Click Open Task Manager.
  • On the Startup tab, right-click each enabled startup item and select Disable.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Restart.

Slow boot gone away? now troubleshoot startup programs by enabling one at a time until program comes back and that's your offending program.

Now you can restore your system by doing the following:
  • Press the "Windows + R"
  • Type msconfig and click OK.
  • On the General tab, select Normal startup.
  • Click the Services tab.
  • Clear the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
  • Click Enable all.
  • Click the Startup tab.
  • Click Open Task Manager and enable all of your startup programs.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Restart.

I see your using a 5400 rpm maniacal hard drive which is not fast, is the drive full?
How long have you had this problem?
When did the problem start to happen? after a update? after you installed a program?
How much ram do you have?
What CPU do you have?

[Image: FRST.png] Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

  • Make sure that Addition option is checked.
  • Press Scan button and wait.
  • The tool will produce two logfiles on your desktop: FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
Please copy and paste their content into your next reply.
please see the results of the scan

yes, it's a slow hard drive. it is about three years old.

I personally only use SSD drives now but this laptop belongs to an elderly friend don't think he would want to send the money on an SSD

another issue I'm having with his laptop is the brightness keys are reversed and sometimes it starts with a black screen.?

the only fix I can come up with is to disable fast startup that seems to fix it?
There are some things to consider:
  • You have Celeron® CPU N2840 @ 2.16GHz
  • You have 5400 rpm maniacal hard drive
  • How much ram you have?
This is never going to be a super fast laptop, so things to check.
  • Make sure Laptop is free from Malware
  • Run SFC /Scannow
  • Run Chkdsk
  • Uninstall Kaspersky and see if it improves
  • Disable Fast Boot
  • Update Windows
  • Update all Drivers ie Chipset, Graphics Driver
  • Disable ULPS, do a search in registry for EnableUlps and set it to 0
  • Change to settings High Performance plan
  • Disable unnecessary services

Control Panel> Click on System> Click on Advanced System Settings> Advanced tab, click on Settings in the Performance box

Disable these:
  • Animations in the taskbar
  • Enable Peek
  • Fade or slide menus into view
  • Fade or slide ToolTips into view
  • Fade out menu items after click
  • Slide open combo boxes
Disable any others you don't need.

Hope this help
