How do i find out if my pc can be upgraded to change OS? Its an asus x540sa notebook. 4GB ram, 500GB HDD.

I would pretty surprised if Linux did not run on your laptop. I would say the best way is to boot to a Linux distro of your choice and see if it runs OK.
Also you could install virtualbox and see if Linux runs on it, it still using your laptop hardware.
Check your hardware specs with distro of choice to be on the safe side.
