That's why I said it comes down to personal preference.
even the best of them probably aren't going to protect you from something you are likely to actually get...

use a secure browser ie: Firefox or Chrome and keep it updated.
If you don't need java for certain sites, then disconnect it from your browser..instructions https://www.java.com/en/download/help/disable_browser.xml
Use sane surfing habits.
Use strong/unique passwords for every site you log in to.

I have installed Avast for some people and it is as good as most of them. I find it comes with a lot of extra pretty much useless features that can confuse users..like the web protection module and the update manager which constantly checks windows and other software for updates...nag nag. but some people like to be nagged..
I find it behaves best if I install only the real time protection (file system monitor) and email protection.

Avira free is also very effective as far as these free scanners can be, although it has the potential to annoy and cripple by pushing program upgrades, and things, like browser safety, cloud backups, pc speedup etc.

I agree with others re the NAT firewall on your router, that and the Windows 7 and Windows 8xx firewalls which are very easy to customize once you get past the front end..(advanced settings)

As for the Poll I would probably vote 'none of the above'
