Are you having a problem with Windows Update after a fresh/clean install of Windows 8.1? Is Windows update stuck on checking for updates and won't give you any updates to install? Good news, I have found the solution.

Now the reason it can't properly check for updates is because it is missing an update that improves the windows update client. That Update is called KB3112336. So basically, there are out of date windows update files that need updating in order for it to check Microsoft's Update server and tell us which updates are missing from our computer.

So Now I will show step by step on how to install the missing update and get your system checking for updates properly. Before you attempt to install this update, please make sure you have done the following:
  • Activate your Windows 8.1 License ( You may have trouble installing the latest updates after you have installed the missing one until windows is fully activated)
  • Installed all your latest drivers

Now that we got that covered, lets begin the tutorial!

    1.  Download KB3112336 From the follwing Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112336
When you get to the page, scowl down to Method 2 Microsoft Download Center and download the correct the one for your system:

    4. After your computer turns back on and you are back at the desktop, immediately double click on the Windows Update File and click Open

    5. It will search your computer to see if the update is already installed on your computer. Since it is a fresh install, It won't be on the system. Then very quickley  a box will appear saying do you want install the Update KB3112336, click yes

Now it will start installing the update!

    6. After it has finished installing, it will prompt you to restart your computer, select restart for the update to take effect.

    7. Once the computer has restarted and you are at the desktop, go back to windows update and select cheek for updates again and this time it should show you what updates you need to install. Give a few minutes to an hour and you should see some results!

Now use windows update to download and install the updates. If you don't want to wait hours for windows update to download and install them, have a look at my tutorial on WSUS Offline Update: How to use WSUS Offline Update to Download Windows Updates Manually and Install them

I hope this helps. This has taken me a lot of time and effort to find a solution to this issue, so I hope this tutorial will help you solve your issue quickly. Remember, make sure windows is fully activated and you have installed all latest drivers.
