Dell Laptop with OEM Win7 home premium x64.  If i do a repair install with non OEM win 7 cd, will it leave dell specific files and folders unaltered?   If I have to, I can do a Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup but it won't save all the programs I have installed, desktop, etc.
Hello there,
All I can say that in my case, I did already all kinds of repair install / system repairs and even Tweaking.com System repair. In all cases my Acer-specific files and folders remained unaltered.

Bye

Used Magic Jellybean to obtain CD Key. Followed instruction for Repair Install Windows 7. Everything appeared OK no more error messages with sfc/ scannow. Tuesday April 14 th, when I turned on my computer desktop image disappeared, screen black, lower-righthand corner windows is not genuine Windows 7 Build 7601. Tried to activate online, not available. Tried to enter 25 character key again, said key not valid for activation. Where do I go now????
If Comptons advice doesn't work then read this and give it a try: https://www.askvg.com/genuine-windows-7-became-pirated-make-it-original-and-activated-again/

Or you could try opening a cmd prompt as Admin and typing
Quote:SLMGR -REARM

It should say 'Command completed successfully'.
Restart your computer *note This may not be a permanent fix

SLMGR -REARM is temporary activation, 3 times and you have to fresh install, don't want that!!
