I am getting massive hdd usage from windows 8.1 and the drive is noisy
this is just a fresh install of windows 8.1
the hard drive in here is a Hitachi HGST Travelstar Z5K500
What kind of noise is the drive making?
No it's just the drive reading and writing constantly
so it's fine
That is not normal if your hard drive is thrashing about reading and writing constantly in 8.1
Have you checked the health of your hard drive?
It's a new laptop so the health would be good
Yep... being a new laptop odds are the hard drive is ok however I would check anyway in case that new hard drive is faulty. There has to be a reason you are getting heavy reads and writes. I would rule out issues with hardware first.
It is normal for Windows 8.1 to do that. I have ran arch linux on it
it's just when the laptop boots up it loads the windows programs and then it is quiet
OK... I have 2 machines running 8.1 and the drives are pretty much calm and quiet.
