Folder Ownership
#1
Hi

Some of my folders have duplicate 'Account Unknown' entries and the CBS log has 'Ignoring duplicate ownership for directory'. Can I delete the extra user names or disable them?

Thanks

Hi Ron, Was you using this computer on a domain? Because if you used to use it on a domain and now just use this computer as a standard user account and DO NOT use it on the domain account no more,  that's probably why them accounts exist.

That could be a reason why they are "Account Unknown" or from a deleted account. Just make sure no User Accounts are using any of them files in them "Unknown Account" they are more than likely NOT using them, which means they should be safe to delete, as long as there not ever going to be used again. but remember your my eyes, I can't see from here.

Also is this the same machine with the problem that's been ongoing for 2 years?  if so "You need to rebuild that operating system".

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. I have not been on a domain, although I do run mediawiki on my computer. I am not 100% sure but I think it may have been caused when I ran the 'upgrade assistant' and 'upgrade advisor, which I did not let finish. I was checking to see if it threw up any problems if I did an upgrade repair. Yes, it is the same computer on which I had two files that could not be repaired. The CBS log is now full of all sorts of issues. My computer does appear to be working fine though. There are a lot of instances of "Account Unknown" but there does not appear to be any re system folders. I am even more unsure about doing an upgrade repair than before. I have been in a couple of computer repair shops near where I live and when I mentioned sfc scannow has revealed damaged system files that cannot be repaired, they did not know what I was talking about and asked what scanner was I using, and went on about these online scanners are no good, well I agree with that bit.

PS: I did attempt to do a system restore but is would not let me or should I say it went through the process and then said no changes had been made.

Kind regards.

Those Account Unknown should be OK to delete if they are not in use.  If Repair Install has not worked. I would do a fresh install of the operating system.
It seems the operating system as some damage and is in a bit of a mess also your getting damaged system files that cannot be repaired.

Sorry Brian, I have not done a repair install as yet. Re above, I was checking out before doing one when I encountered more problems.  I will delete the 'Account Unknown' instances and see if it gets rid on some of the issues in the CBS log.

Many thanks

PS: I managed in the end to get rid of Accounts Unknown. I didn't really understand the terms, object and parent. I had to go to users/my user name/ properties/ advanced
